A Win for Domestic Violence Survivors
The U.S. Supreme Court prevents domestic violence abusers from owning guns. This is a major win not only for domestic violence survivors but for the protection and safety of all Americans.
In an 8 to 1 decision in United States vs. Rahimi, the nation’s firearm laws have indicated provisions preventing individuals who threaten physical harm to others from misusing and obtaining firearms.
Advocates for domestic violence victims and gun control groups called on the court to uphold this law.
When the court determines that an individual has posed a credible threat to the physical safety of another, the individual could temporarily be disarmed, and restricted from obtaining firearms which is consistent with the Second Amendment.
It should be of note that Supreme Court Justice Clarence “Uncle Tom” Thomas was the one out of eight who voted against the protection of domestic violence survivors.
Seventy women a month, on average are shot and killed by intimate partners according to the gun control group Every Town for Gun Safety.
This Supreme Court ruling is a step in the right direction, but we still have mountains to climb.
