Pedophilia, alternately spelled Paedophilia is a psychiatric disease associated with sexual attractions toward young children often accompanied by child sexual offending.
The terms Pedophile and Sex Offender are often used interchangeably but they have different and distinctive meanings. A sex offender is someone convicted of a sex-crime which may not involve a minor.
Some Pedophiles are sexually attracted only to children while others are attracted to children and adults.
Most Pedophiles are men; the condition is exceedingly rare in women who are often referred to as Child Molesters.
While the underlying causes of pedophilic disorder are unclear the behavior has been associated with childhood abuse or neglect, however, resent studies have concluded that certain brain structure and functions may have resulted from neurodevelopmental problems occurring in utero in early childhood.
People with pedophilic disorder:
often acts on sexual urges that lead them to commit serious sexual offenses.
The identifying child molester views children as sexual objects, they are very skilled in finding victims
Often has difficulties with adult sexual relationships or has a prison criminal history
The pedophile adult:
will have limited peer relationships
will always surround themselves with a group of young children
will engage in activities that lead to close relationships with young children such as a youth church pastor, camp counselor, Boy/Cub Scout leader, or athletic coach.
Studies suggests that a small percentage of pedophiles have an interest in very young children, including toddlers and infants.
Data suggests that as children, gay males have an increased risk for physical and sexual abuse and this act may be perpetrated by adult men who don’t identify as gay, but seizes the opportunity to molest or rape a male child who displays gay tendencies. The attack is out of a desire to act out a male-on-male sexual fantasy or to attack out of anger with the intent of punishing the child for being gay. The same principals apply to women who sexually molest or rape young females identifying as gay or struggling with gender identification.
Crimes associated with Pedophilic Disorder include:
Oral copulation of a minor
Distribution of Child Pornography
Commercial distribution of Child Pornography including employing minors to participate in or assist with distribution.
Possession of Child Pornography
Lewd acts with a child under 14 years of age
Anyone convicted of any of these offenses will be punished by imprisonment, subject to penalties and fines and will be required to register as a sex offender. The Sex Offender registry is available for public viewing.
